install Portuguese word dictionary

JSpencer

Recently moved to Brazil from USA.
I need to install the Brazilian dictionary to spell check the docs written
in Portuguese. I am running the US version of OfficeXP, and have purchased
the Brazilian version. I do not want to install the complete Portuguese
version of Office, as I still prefer to work in english.
How do I get the Portuguese dictionary off the CD and onto my machine?

The following instructions should work, but no guarantees, and you want to be
very careful:

1. Control Panel/Add Remove programs; you want to "add" a program
2. Use the Brazilian Office CD when prompted to insert a disk or CD
3. Make SURE to select the custom type of setup
4. Set everything listed to not be available (a Rex X)
5. Now drill down through the Office tools, looking for the Proofing tools.
6. Set ONLY the Brazilian tools to "Run from my computer"
7. OK your way through setup, making sure you don't allow it to remove other
programs, or anything else

At the end, it should end up installing only the Brazilian tools

Thx Cindy, but no joy in mudville....
I installed just the dictionaries as you suggested to C:program files and it
appeared to install ok........
Started up word (English version) and went to check a Portuguese doc. Error
msg appeared [mssp3pb.dll & mssp 232.dll] not available.
Perusing previous blogs, I searched for the *.lex files, and copied them to
c:pF/MSShared/proof.... but still no joy. Now the error shows [custom dic
///....not available]

Hmmm. time to uninstall Office, and reinstall? I hate that cuz I gotta call
in and explaing why I am installing Office on a new machine......

Hmmm. is that the entire error message? I've never seen a message like this
before.

Before we get ourselves all entangled: you mention you purschased a Brazilian
version of Office. Is it the same version as the English?

You do know it's possible to purchase a Language Pack CD, with all the 30+
supported languages, including Brazilian Portuguese? You might have to dig a
bit to find the one for Office XP (2003 being the current version), but that
would be less painful that what you're trying to do...

No, I abreviated the error msg from "The custom dictionary D:\Documents and
settings\spencj01\Application Da.... in not available" It takes 8 clicks of
the cancel button to close the window. Needless to say all spell checking is
kaput. I'm sure I'll have to uninstall completely and re-install. :(

As for versions, I have office XP (a '02 version) and the local office uses
Office 2003.
As we've already outlaid the cash for another Brazilian Office CD, I'm
hesitant to request funds for the language pak CD.... :p so I'll endure the
pain...the pain..

Final Solution: Uninstalled Office, rebooted, manually went and deleted all
MS Office files left in C:programs Files, rebooted, ran defrag, rebooted,
installed Office (english), then immeadiately installed just the proofing
tools from the Brazilian CD.

Now Word can properly spell & grammar check both languages.

Xavier,
I am guessing that you are running the USA version of Word.
To add the Portuguese spell checker, you need a Brazilian or Portugal
version, or the extra proofing tools CD from Microsoft.

If you have a Portuguese version of Word, and you do not want to overwrite
the English version, but just add the proofing tools, you can do that.
The "proofing tools" needs to be added, not just the dictionary.

Insert the CD, and run setup.
Select "specify what to load", that is, do not load the standard setup.
Select the applications you wish to have the "proofing tools" be active on,
such as Word & Excel. continue
De-select all boxes so that nothing will be installed.
Then search the boxes for the "proofing tools", (way down at the bottom)
Select "run from computer" for the proofing tools. continue
Select "do not remove existing versions". continue
After install, you can start word in English.
Highlite the text that will be in Portuguese, and set language to Portuguese.
For me, it checked my spelling and grammar with no problems.
I did not have any problems eith full Portuguese documents, or mixed English
& Portuguese, as long as you specify which text is which, by highlighting the
text and setting the language.

Hope this helps.

I followed your sequence and I was successful instaling and using both
dictionaries on my computers. Thanks, it was a great and valuable instruction.
