i currently have a microsoft office 2003 standard version of office on my
personal computer at home.
My question is i am going to purchase a laptop for my girlfreind who lives
with me, can anyone tell me will i now have to purchase a new copy of office
2003 or can she use my legally purchased CD of Office on the new laptop
computer instead. it sounds like a really easy question but we both do not
know the answer to this hence the question

Technically you can't because EULA says:

conditions of this EULA:
1.1 Installation and use. You may:
(a) install and use a copy of the Software on one personal computer or
other device; and
(b) install an additional copy of the Software on a second, portable
device for the exclusive use of the primary
user of the first copy of the Software.

So although you can install it on a second portable device, it should be
for your own exclusive use.

The question is how will Microsoft know about this? I don't know the
answer.

So it is upto you whether you want to install it or not.
