Installed 2007 B2TR -- Can't access ON, Outlook, Word or Excel

Because of problems with ON Search, I followed a link from this discussion
group tonight to "Try OneNote Instant Search" by installing OneNote Beta 2 TR.

I made sure I had Windows upgrades first. Then installed B2TR. Near the end
of the install, a message briefly flashed saying "Installation failed."

I re-booted and tried to open OneNote. The message was: "MS Office OneNote
has encountered a problem and needs to close."

Repeated tries and re-boots gave me the same message.

I then tried to open Outlook and got this message: "Cannot start MS Office
Outlook. Cannot initialize MS Office shared utilities. Restart your computer
or reinstall MS Office Outlook."

Then Excel: "Not enough memory to run MS Office Excel." (There is plenty of
memory.)

Then Word: "There is not enough memory or disk space to run Word." (Ditto)

As you can imagine, I am doing my best not to panic. I read another post on
a help site of someone who got similar messages and was not able to fix
anything by uninstalling / reinstalling.

Previous to this, I had been running 2007 for several months. Searching in
OneNote was not working well, and Outlook crashed several times a day, but
Word and Excel were absolutely fine.

I have tried to submit a bug report on this at the 2007 beta site, but keep
going down blind alleys when I try to submit feedback.

I would REALLY appreciate some knowledgeable help on this.

Thanks,

Sheila

So the B2TR setup failed? Follow the steps in the KB linked on my B2TR
issues post to resolve setup issues. Then try installing it again.
If it still fails, follow the steps in the KB to create a log file and
email it to me (you can get my email from my website).

Many thanks, Patrick, for all clarity and thoroughness in this discussion
group!

I'm following the KB 923718 now and have emptied the Temp folder, verified
2GB free space, and Enabled Windows Installer Logging by Adding Registry
Entries.

The next step is "Enable update controller logging by using a command line
switch." To do that, I need to re-download B2TR because I hadn't saved it to
my hard drive.

That's when I realized, "Aaaargh! What I tried to install yesterday was not
B2TR (filename: Office2007b2tr-kb000000-fullfile-en-us.exe), but MS Office
Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel and Powerpoint 2007 -- Beta 2 Technical
Refresh (Filename: O2007Cnv.exe)

For the Compatibility Pack, the article at
http://www.microsoft.com/canada/office/preview/beta/converter.mspx gives
instructions for "Removing the Compatibility Pack (Beta 2 Technical Refresh)"
from the Control Panel.

Should I go ahead with that?

And then should I re-download the REAL B2TR?

Cheers from Beautiful British Columbia,

Sheila

You can remove the compatibility pack or leave it on your computer. It
shouldn't do any harm right now.

I removed it, to see if that alone would restore my access to the Office
products. No luck. So continued on with the re-install of B2TR and WDS 3.0.

Works beautifully. Thanks, again, Patrick. You're a doll!
