Installed fonts not shown in apps

I installed new fonts on my PC running Windows Me per the instructions. The
fonts show up in the fonts folder in the Control Panel, but do not appear in
the font list of any of my Office 2000 applications. If I open the fonts
while in one of the Office programs, I can see them in the fonts list and use
them in a document. How do I get the fonts to appear in the fonts list
without opening the fonts?

How exactly did you install the fonts? (I don't have Windows Me, so I don't
know what the instructions say.)

Also, what printer do you have set as your default printer?

The instructions indicate that if you go to Control Panel and open the fonts
folder, you can click on an option to install fonts. I do not have that
option, so I copied the fonts to the font folder. According to what I read on
the Web, this was supposed to be ok.

My default printer is an HP LaserJet 6MP. I also have an HP OfficeJet 5510.
I made that my default printer and the fonts still didn't show up.

"Install new font" is in the "File" menu

It should be okay, but for whatever reason, that often doesn't work.

Generally, if you go to Control Panel and open the fonts folder, then click
on the File menu, you should have an option to Install New Font. If you
don't have that option, you may need to ask why in one of the Windows Me
groups. I believe you need to install the fonts so they'll show up in the
Office applications.

Okay, thanks. Just wanted to check, because fonts often won't show up if you
have, for example, a generic fax printer set up as your default printer.
Your fonts should show up with either of the printers you mentioned, though,
so I'm back to thinking it's an issue with how they were installed.

It is not OKin Win ME if you don't have the "Install new font" option.
Try these:

Fonts folder has lost its system properties.
This will be obvious if viewing the fonts folder. You will not have
the names and the "Install new font" option under file.
If so:
Check the protection in Properties on folder c:\windows\fonts
If it is not shown with a check in System, then you cannot install
new fonts. It should also be protected, so you may not be able to
alter from Explorer.
In DOS mode, (or from Start-Run) use the command
attrib +s c:\windows\fonts
Reboot and all should be OK

or...
Use TweakUI
Tweak UI 1.33 for Windows 2000, Windows NT, Windows Millennium
Edition, Windows 98 or Windows 95.
Details at: (may wrap)
http://www.microsoft.com/ntworkstation/downloads/PowerToys/Networking/NTTweakUI.asp
Download at:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsme/guide/tweakui.exe

The system attribute is normally the problem and the DOS fix is the
solution in the majority of the last few hundred responses I have made
to similar problems. The Fonts folder will not function as a special
folder without the system attribute. The other common problem is that
the hidden desktop.ini is missing or corrupt and TweakUI will fix
that.
There is a third problem mentioned here but, in my experience, this
one is uncommon.
(Fontext.dll file may be missing or damaged)

I do not have that option in the File menu. That would have been too easy.
The only two options there are New and Close.

Thanks. I'll try one of the Win Me groups.

Sorry, but that means the operating system is were the problem is. I see
you are headed to the ME group for more help. So I hope someone has an
