Installing Office XP Hangs

I am trying to install Office XP Professional, onto a new laptop running
Windows XP Professional SP2.

When it gets to 'Preparing to install ..' it hangs, and doesn't recover.
I've left it for an hour, and it just sits and nothing changes.
The laptop came with Works installed, so I thought it might be clashing, but
when I try to un-install the word component of Works, it also just hangs.
Again, I left this for an hour or so, and in the end had to kill the
process.

Any ideas?

Have you tried running a scandisk and defragmentation to ensure that your
system is in good shape before installing?
