Installing Project Server 2002

Hi, out of the blue my management wants me to install Project server 2002 in
our environment. The main purpose to begin with, will be for all amangers to
access/post their project status to/from a central location...similar to what
we can do with Project central..according to one of the VP's

We have few licenses for project 2000 which i am planning on using on the
client side.

How hard/easy is it to do this ? Any good resources where i can start.

Thanks

If you do not already own any Project Server licenses then dont do
2002. Do 2003. It is a much better product.

Then check out the Project home page: www.microsoft.com/project there
are several Gudes there: Configuration Planning, Installation,
Application Configuration, Administration and Disaster Planning. These
are excellent resources for your use.

You might also think about working with a consulting partner that has
background planning and configuring project server.

Thanks Brian. We have Project server 2002 license. Once we install and start
working with 2002, how hard is it upgrade to 2003 or higher?

Thanks Again.

It is not very hard at all. I just thought I would check since it is a
more stable product. Make sure you install Service Pack 1 though. :)

Brian, thanks for pointing me to the right resources. I am in the process of
reading the deployment guide at this time. Havea quick question

I am planning on installing Project server 2002 on our internal webserver
which runs our Intranet. Its a powerfull server. Will this create any
problems.

I am planning on using our Database (SQL 200 std.) server, which is
different machine as the SQL server for project installation.

Do i HAVE to install MS Share point team services ?

Its gonna be 15 users accessing this server probably using Project 2002 ( i
installed this on my PC and its doesn't tell me standard or professional in
help and about), i am sure they will not access it simultaneously. Also they
are all new to Project.

Thanks again

With this small number of users it should be fine. You do not need STS.
It is an optional part of the installation. But Issues and Documents
features will be disabled as they rely on STS.

Brian i installed project 2000 on my computer. Unfortunately it doesn't tell
me its standard or professional on the CD. I can't find this information in
help and about either. I am assuming thats it's standard edition. Am i right.
Is there a way to confirm this.

Thanks

Project 2000 does not have a standard or professional.

To get the most out of Project Server 2002 you should use project
professional 2002.

Will project 2000 work with Project server 2002. If yes, then i am assuming
it will be more at the standard level than the professional level. Am i right
?

It can work but I dont even remember what the limitations are beyond
the obvious of not being able to edit the global, using the resource
sub wizard, etc.

Best case you use Project 2002

Ok..i finally installed Projet server 2002 on our intranet server yesterday.
I have to access it yet. To my knowledge our managers will be using this
service primarily to track projects and resources. Like a VP will post a
project plan and schedule and managers will be provinding update via project.
Hope this is possible with the setup we have - project server 2002 + Project
2000, i just found out that we 10 licenses for Project web access.

After the install i have a few questions

1. I skipped the webserver information, selecting "will configure later".
now how do i acccess the project server web interface? I tried
http://servername/projectserver after adding this URL to trusted sites on my
IE. Didn't work! Help!

2. At the step choose version of project used to access the server, i chose
"project 2002 prof./project 2000 which doesnot require users to authenticate
when posting stuff to the server, can i change this option later ?

Thanks

Adding to what i just posted..during the install i installed it under the
Administrators website, i had other sites/applications under default website
i didn't wanna disturb them!

Thanks
