interview transcription

I am going to be transcribing several hours worth of interview tapes, and I'd like to know if there's any simple way to make alternating bullets like so

AC: "blah, blah, blah...
GM: "yes, i agree...
AC: "Etc, etc...
GM: "So on, and so forth...

How can I make the initials appear whenever I hit ENTER without typing them out each time? This will save me a lot of time in the long run. Perhaps there's a template I could download? I have Word 2000.

Yes, you can do this. Set up two "numbered" styles. For the first, set the
"Number style" to "(none)" and type "AC" into the "Number format" box.
Repeat with another style using "GM." Assign each style as the "Style for
following paragraph" of the other.

I haven't tried this, but you might be able to configure
each initial as a different "style" (with the same font
specs) and each paragraph would default to the alternate
style, though I'm not sure how you could imbed the
initials. Another thing you could do is just enter
as "auto type" that ac automatically becomes AC: and gm
automatically becomes GM: .- John
