Is EULA demand a Trojan Horse I should try to clean up?

About 1.5 years ago I bought and installed and have since
used extensively Office XP. Today, after downloading and
installing the 'Critical Updates' from Microsoft, I'm
receiving a dialog box demanding I accept a EULA (I did
that a year and a half ago for this package). So far,
I've just ended the task for each of the Office
applications I've tried.

Is this EULA demand legitimately from Microsoft, or have I
picked up some kind of bug that is using any response to
the dialog to get further into my system?

I know my copy of Office XP is legal and legitimate. And
my Excel 2003 install is not affected though it also
received a 'Critical Update' today.

A response by someone at Microsoft would be appreciated.
