There will ALWAYS be changes to fields even with the simplest update of
actual work (fielkds like Resume, Stop, Actual Finbish, Remaing Duration...
to nalme only a few)

Which fields would you like to use to manually update (there are many
possibilities)
And which field(s) should not be recalculated?

Just what are you trying to accomplish here. It's sound like you want
to have a project with estimated values for things like duration, etc;
update the tasks with actuals (which may or may not be the same
numbers you had estimated) when they're done, and yet you don't want
project to give you any indication that those actuals will have an
impact on the future of the project - ie, even if a task delay will
force the project to finish 6 months later than it should you DON'T
want Project to tell you about it. No offense, but that just doesn't
make any sense. Why use the software if you don't want to use the
information it can provide you?

OK il try again. sorry abot my poor english
In my opinion there are no connection between how many hours you have used
on a task , and the actual progress. i.e. if I have a task that are 100 hrs (
10 doc)ave used 50 hrs I am probably not 50% finish. That’s why I want to
have a manually progress field. I am using project web server, so we are
updating hrs trough that system.

Hi Runejors ,

The correct way to update tasks is to enter Actual Hours and Remaining
Hours, leaving Project to work out the percentages for you. Try it and see
:)

Incidentally, if your are using a server, next time try posting on the
server newsgroup. Please see FAQ Item: 24. Project Newsgroups. FAQs,
companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at this
web address: http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm

Progress measured as "% Complete" always refers to the amount of time that
has been spent compared to the amount of time that the task will take. It
not a matter of opinion, that's simply how the concept of "progress" is
defined. MS Project can tracks "% Work Complete" which is the man-hours
that have been used compared to the man-hours required - usually works out
to the same number of % Complete but not necessarily always. I think what
you're looking for is Project's "% Physical Complete" field which is an
indicator of the physical progress made towards completing the deliverable
the task produces - ie, if I have 4 walls to paint and I've finished 2 of
them, I'm 50% Physical Complete, regardless of the time and work
percentages. You'll find that field on the Tracking Table in the Gantt view
or you can add it as a column to any task table you choose. But entering
data in that field will not update your other fields and will NOT help
understand if you're going to finish on-time or late or are running over
budget, which are the main reasons for bothering to track progress in the
first place.
