Is there a way to make messenger icon not display in system tray?

I am currently running Office 2003, but do not like "windows messenger"
program (so I never run it), but when Outlook 2003 is running the messenger
icon always appears in system tray (windows XP pro). Is there a way to not
have the messanger icon display?

you can hide icons in the tray. Look on the task bar options.

Thank you very much. Hiding the inactive icon in the system tray did the
trick. That is a Windows feature I had overlooked.
I guess more specificly I wanted to ask, is it possible to not have the
windows messenger even attempt to load when I am running Outlook. I was
looking for an option in Outlook (or control panel?) to disable windows
messenger.

look on the tools, options menu - i think it's on the other tab but could be
wrong- and disable messenger integration. if you never use messenger, you
can disable it completely and maybe uninstall it - look at Google for
instructions.

Hi, I come acoss the same issue:

Windows XP SP2, Outlook 2003 SP2
Whenever I start Outlook Messenger starts as well.
I would like to use Messenger so I do not want to deinstall it. I just do
not want it to switch itself on every time I start Outlook; I rather chose
myself when I can start it.

Went to TOOLS > OPTIONS > OTHER and unchecked the checkbox but to no avail.
When starting Outlook Messenger still starts, the box remains unchecked. The
box is only a tag which allows me to see the status of others while typing an
email; it will not deactivate the Messenger startup.

On a different Machine a colleague uses Outlook 2007 and comes across the
same issue there. I now installed the Office Communicator on my system and
now the messenger starts no more but the Office Communicator starts
automatically without that I have the option to deactivate it.

I have checked the registry but coudl not find any option in Outlook which
triggers the Messenger. In Outlook I could not find anything and in the
messenger options I could not find anything either.

Any help is appreciated.

Cheers,
OH
