Is there a way to protect single cells or a column?

I am unable to find a way to protect certain cells or the entire column in a
spread sheet. The cells/column I want to protect has calculation functions
in it. Is there anyway to protect just these cells or this column without
protecting the entire sheet? This is necessary as some of the values in the
other columns are contunally updated, therefore changing the calculations in
the column I want to protect.
Thank you very much.

Hi John,

If your are referring to Project, it is not possible. If you are referring
to Excel, then this newsgroup is specifically for matters dealing with
Microsoft Project. I suggest you try to find a more appropriate newsgroup
that deals with Office/Excel problems.

John,
This is a Microsoft Project newsgroup. Your question sounds like it is
asking about Excel. I don't believe individual cells can be locked but
you might want to post on one of the Excel newsgroups just to be sure.

If you really are asking about Microsoft Project, no, individual cells
cannot be "locked" although there are schemes wherein an Event macro can
be used to effectively detect unauthorized changes.

If you're talking about Excel, select the cells where you wish to ALLOW
changes, select Format Cells in the menu, select the Protection tab, and
clear the checkbox for the "locked" property. Now in the Tools menu, select
Protection, Protect sheet, and turn on protection for the whole worksheet.
Changes will be disallowed for all cells except those where you have
explicitly cleared the locked property so as to allow changes to them.
