Is there a way to set a rate per resource PER TASK 8/28

Can you set up separate billing amounts per resource per task in Microsoft
Project?

I would like to designate the rate at which the resource is billed by task.
In other words on one task this resource is billed at $35.00 per hour and on
another task the resource is billed at $50.00 per hour and so on and so on.
This can be 100 different rates for 100 different tasks.

Is there a way to do this? ....and if there is could someone supply a
formula for this such that the end result would appear in the COST field.
There can be many tasks with different rates. The Resource rate area only
allows for 5 if I associate to a resource specific. We need many more than
this.

I believe you will need to establish separate resources for each rate, that
will allow Project to calculate your costs properly. However, this cause
problems with resource allocation as project will not understand that Joe35
and Joe50 are really the same guy.

You may be able to use a multiplier in a spare number field. For example,
you could list JoeBase at $25/hr in the resource sheet. Then establish a
mulitiler to put into each task in a spare number field.

Your actual cost would be written to a spare Cost field such as
Cost1=[Number1]*[Cost]. This will be quite tricky, what if you assign two
resources to a task Joe with multiplier 2 and John with multiplier 1.25?

This needs some VBA I am afraid.

It seems rather strange that a given resource would have a $35 rate on
one task and a $50 rate on another task since pay rates are most often
tied to skill level, not to what the resource is doing. That's why
Project's rate tables are per resource. The only effective way to do
what you want is to create separate resources for each task. For
example, let's say you have a resource, Bob, and he is assigned to task
A at $35/hr. Bob is also assigned to task B but at $50/hr. Create a
"Bob-1" resource and a "Bob-2" resource with rates of $35 & $50.

Now let me discuss a finer point. From a cost standpoint, most likely
Bob's base rate at the company is a fixed amount, say $25/hr. That is
how he is paid by the company. What the company charges the customer is
the billing rate, $35/hr or $50/hr, depending on various factors.
Project is designed to track project costs, not be be a finance
application. My advice, put the resource base rate into Project's
schedule and leave the billing costs to your financial accounting
software.
