Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) Processor: Intel Is there a way to use a keyboard shortcut for format painter? I want to avoid using the mouse or touchpad to copy formats.

You can assign keystrokes to bot the CopyFormat & the PasteFormat commands
if you wish. See Word Help on Custom Keystrokes if you aren't familiar with
how to do so.

IMHO, however, if you're using Word at anything other than a basic personal
level it would be a far better investment of your time to forget about
direct formatting & the Format Painter in the first place. Instead, learn to
do your formatting using Styles, to which keystrokes can also be assigned.

Thank you, Bob. I have assigned keystrokes to CopyFormat and PasteFormat. This will speed up some things I do.

I agree with you that it would be advantageous to assign keystrokes to Styles. How do I do this?

As an aside, I have not been having much luck finding answers to these kinds of questions in Help. Is there a place I should be looking?

Thanks again,
- Steve

Hi Steve.
I agree with you that it would be advantageous to assign keystrokes to
Styles. How do I do this?

You can do this in a number of ways. The fastest one is via the same
dialogue you used to assign keyboard shortcuts to the copy and paste
formatting commands. Just click on Tools>Customize Keyboard, scroll down
to Styles, select one and assign it a keyboard shortcut. You can access
the same menu by clicking on the Format>Shortcut Key in the Modify Style
dialogue.
As an aside, I have not been having much luck finding answers to these
kinds of questions in Help. Is there a place I should be looking?

These newsgroups are always very helpful, especially since you get
personalised feedback for very user-specific situations. For more
general advice, you can always check Word's (not always perfect) Help
feature, or the Word MVP page, which is run by Microsoft MVPs. See here:

<http://word.mvps.org/>

Note that there is a Word for Mac-specific subpage, but that much of the
advice given for Word for Windows applies to the Mac version, too.

Thank you Michel. I did not know how to assign keyboard shortcuts to Styles and now I know two ways to do it. And I did not know what an MVP was - and now I do.

And I now know who to go to with my technical questions!

Much appreciated,
- Steve
