Items copied from other programs appear as a cross in box. Why?

No matter whether I copy and paste photos or drawing items from other
programs into PowerPoint, they appear as a cross in a box, not what I copied.

Try saving the drawing items into a picture format (eg: .jpg, .gif, .png) in
other programs, then insert the picture by clicking Insert > Pictures > From
File. See if it works this time round.
