Journal / custom fields

I am trying to turn my Journal into a PO Book, I have
most of what I want except I added a 'User Defined Field'
and named it 'Date' when I look at my journal the collumn
named 'Date' says (None). How do I enter a date, I have
tried everything. I eventually want to have my po book
layed out by : Date;Company;Start Time;Subject
