jpeg attachment question

This is just a general question about pasting a jpg file into an outlook
e-mail message.

I pasted a jpg (of considerable size) into an e-mail note AND pasted the
same file into a word doc. The e-mail note was 2MB, the word doc less
than 500K.

Can someone explain why the difference in size?
