KB949074

Rob

When first running office update today i had 6 updates to download and
install including this one. All the updates showed to install successfully.
Upon rechecking, this update shows and will not install successfully. I
downloaded the fullfile version and ran it, but office update still shows
this update is needed. Does anyone have a solution for this?

Thanks,
Rob

Same here for today's KB949074 on my Office 2002/XP and 2000 on three XP
machines. I downloaded and tried to install
office2003-KB949074-FullFile-ENU.exe, but it told me "The expected
version of the product was not found on your system." :(

Same here (Office 2000). Hopefully the Office Update team will fix it at some
point. Is there any way we can bring this to their attention?

What would be even nicer is if Microsoft got rid of Office Update altogether
and updated Office 2000 using Microsoft Update.

Same problem here on two different fully up-to-date WindowsXP SP3 systems
with Office 2003 installations that have all previous required updates
applied.

The Office Update reinstall attempt produces "Installation Unsuccessful -
Update for Microsoft Office 2003 (KB 949074) and "You may be prompted to
submit an installation error report ..." (<-- hah!).

Attempts to manually install the downloaded update fail with the report "The
update has already been applied or is included in an update that has already
been applied."

Same symptoms here. XP sp3 with Office 2003 (and Office 2002).

One more bit of info:
I looked in Add/Remove Software and KB 949074 shows as installed (today). I
haven't tried uninstalling it from A/R and letting Office Update have another
go - I assume that I'm protected against whatever this patch was supposed to
protect against, and that eventually Office Update will get its act together
and stop complaining that it can't install this already-installed patch.

Same symtoms here on two Windows XP SP3 machines with Office for Windows XP
installed on them.

Office Update site offers KB949074 but the install fails. Downloading the
file manually does not help because it will not install either because it
can't detect that Office 2003 is installed on the machines...."The expected
version of the product was not found on your system."

Microsoft Update does not offer this update KB949074, but scans at the
Office Update site still offer up this update that can't install. Hopefully
they will get this straighten out at the Office Update site soon.

Same Issue here. Have gone through most of the "fixes" listed on "how
to troubleshoot Office Updates" page, to no avail.

A bit of irony: Looking at the description of this update, it says:

"This update resolves a problem with the Office Source Engine that may
prevent Office patches from installing properly."

LOL!

Having same problem here. Tried most of the fixes on the
"Troubleshooting Office Updates" page provided by PA Bear, to no
avail. Hopefully somebody will resolve this and post the fix.

Ironically, while looking at the brief description of what this update
is for, I noticed this description:

"This update resolves a problem with the Office Source Engine that may
prevent Office patches from installing properly."

LOL! Oh well...

As KB949074 is not a security-related update, you do not qualify for free
support from MS on this.

Understood. The problem is that a scan on the Microsoft Office Update site
offers up this Office 2003 update KB949074 to machines that are running the
older Office for XP. And of course it will not install on a machine that
has Office XP. If you download the manual setup file it will not install on
a machine that doesn't have Office 2003, yet it is be offered up to machines
that have Office for XP at the Office Update site.

A scan at Microsoft Update does not offer up this KB949074 update on a
machine running Office for XP, but the Microsoft Office update site does.

it's not just office for xp. i use an administrative installation point and
our xp image has never had anything but office 2003 on it. it applies to the
admin point w/o a problem, and after updating the office installation on the
pc, it still shows as being needed.

so went to another pc and manually installed the update. it then shows in
add/remove programs as the kb article says it will, but office update still
sees it as needed.

i just think this whole update is messed up. the kb article says that the
update includes the osecomca.msp file...but the msp file the update actually
includes is named oseca.msp. so i'm figuring the file either isn't right or
their update procedure is looking for a different file, therefore causing it
to still be listed...

i'll just wait for next month to see if they manage to get it fixed....i'm
not wasting one of my support calls on it.

I certainly don't discount any problems you may be experiencing with this
update, however, my input in this thread strickly pertains to machines that
have Office for XP installed on them. The update(KB949074) is for machines
that have Office 2003 installed on them, see:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...C4-5D43-44C3-95CC-949BA1ACA479&displaylang=en
"This update applies to the following product: Microsoft Office 2003"

and should not even be offered up when scanning with machines that have
Office for XP installed on them.

Good luck,

I would like to confirm the problem:

I am running WindowsXPSP3
IE 6
Office 2000

But was offered the update to Office 2003
Which did not successfully install.
Upon a second check it was offered again, and again failed.

I am not running any kind of compatibility package.

Hopefully MS will fix this by the time more Office Updates come out.

Let's see... it looks like this is clearly a MS problem as we're all having it.
.... and the advice we get from MS is:
1) Support isn't free for their problem
2) We can try to troubleshoot it with a troubleshooting guide that provides
13 fairly convoluted solutions for any one of 9 possible problems.

At least admitting the problem is probably the fault of MS would be really
nice.

On Thursday, 12/11/08, I was offered a number of Microsoft updates by the
monthly update service. After the installation I went to the Office Update
site, which offered Office Update KB949074. When I tried to install, it
fails. Downloading the file manually made no difference; it will not install
that way either complaining that it can't detect that Office 2003 is
installed on the machine with the specific message "The expected version of
the product was not found on your system." It seems a bit strange the update
is being offered at all since I have Office Professional 2007 installed on
both computers.

I went to the Microsoft Update site; it does not offer KB949074 update.
However a check at the Office Update says I need it even though it can't
install. This is happening on two computers both running Windows
Professional SP2 with all updates and SP3 with all updates.

Reading through the message regarding this problem is appears there is an
issue with this latest update.

It's apparently faulty detection logic from the OU page, Donald. Could
be it's the state of ose.exe or a version related .dll detection that
needs some tweaking.
Just ignore the offered update.

Agreed!

Just ignore the offered update.

Agreed again, since there is no mechanism at Office Update to hide the
update;)
