Levelling in sub or master

Hi,
Using MSP2002 professional.
Created Master project by inserting individual project. All projects
residing on shared server & not project server.

Simple, typical & may be foolish questions !

What should be the good practise ?
1. Resource levelling in individual sub-projects or in Master Project
?
2. We update the sub-project once every week, what should be the
levelling frequency ? Should it be after all projects are updated on a
fixed day / time ?

Help/advice will be appreciated.

Hi,

First, cretaing a master will NOT allow you to level across projects: for
that you have to link the projects to a resource pool.
A master does not play much of an active role, you better consider it a
window aloowing to open and see several projects at the tilme; true
consolidation only happens through resource sharing.

Do bear in mind that with a resource pool open, leveling will consider all
open detail connected projects. I would say that if and when the projects
use common resources, it is better to level the whole lot at the time in
order to avoid overallocations.

Question 2: yes, best is after updating to recalculate resource load and
re-level. Do not forget the best sequence:

Update (track actual work)
Clear leveling
Update Project: reschedule work
Level

Final point, be very careful with your .mpp files. never rename, move or
even over-write them without first removing from the master project and the
resource pool. If you don't sooner or later one or more projects will get
corrupted, so maintain a regular backup!!
