Licenses

Not 100% sure if this is the right place to ask, but it seems the best.

I've just taken over as IT Manager for a local firm who have been with out
IT support for some time and have been relying on Suppliers.

A New Complete System was installed, using Terminal Servers for Admin Staff
on Thin Clients, and Managers with new PC's.

All the PC's have Office Basic Edition 2003 (OEM)
Terminal Server has Office XP Small Business Version 2002

Now this is my Question we have been supplied with a number of Office Basic
Edition 2003 (OEM) CD'd to make up the required number of Licenses required,
Does it matter that the version all the users are using on the Terminal
server does not match the version number of the extra licenses that we have?

Also reading through other posts, iam I right in thinking that the license
on the PC's cover the users if they use MS-Office on the Terminal Server.

Thanks for any pointers or answers

Hi Michael,

Congratulations on the new job :)

While in some cases where you have a MS Volume license
agreement (http://microsoft.com/licensing) you can
use a 'downgrade' license, you won't be able to
use a MS Office Basic Edition license for
MS Office Small Business as the Small Business Edition
contains apps not avaiable in the Office Basic Edition.

You may want to use the 'contact' link on the above page
to speak with a licensing advisor.

Cheers Bob,

Thanks for confirming my suspicions on this, I had a nasty feeling about
this, when I started to look into it.

I think nobody uses powerpoint or publisher, so i think i will uninstall
Office SB 2002, and install Office BE 2003, go an get a few more Liceneses.
And if any body needs powerpoint or publisher, install these spare licesnse
on their PC.
