Line break in Visio 2003 / HTML export

Hello everybody,

I have a big problem trying to get a line break into Visio 2003 shape
properties. First of all, I cannot enter one "the normal way" because it
is only ONE line to enter text, so Alt+Enter or something like that
won't work. Secondly, when I try to enter e.g. '<BR>' or '\n' it will
display them unchanged and not interpret them correctly in the HTML export.
I know that this is due to JavaScript functions that parse all content
in the data.xml file but the big question is - HOW can I insert a line
break that'll actually display in the browser? Without altering the
JS-code that is. Of course I could do that but would that be legal at
all? The code is Microsoft's, I take it.

Any help appreciated!

M.M.

Sorry, David but this is NOT what I was looking for. I have tried your
tool now and all I can say is that - IT DOES NOT WORK! Fine, I can now
enter 64K of data in a comfortable way - so I write my novel there and
save it as a web page - what do I get ? No line breaks...

Anyone with a real solution please?

Hi Marcus,

Unfortunately, I don't know a way to do this from within Visio. Custom
properties are traditionally just one line of text. However, IE will break
the text into multiple lines if there are spaces at the appropriate
locations. Are the lines not getting broken automatically for you? Or are
you trying to do something a little smarter than what IE does?

BTW, you can modify the web pages at any time after they're generated. We
create the pages for you, but you can tweak them all you want.

Thank you, Andy,

putting spaces at the appropriate spaces isn't quite possible because
you can adjust the width of the frame, right? So it will always display
differently. You see I enter the custom properties through an add-on
that allows for multiple lines of text input. After all, 64K is alot of
data so why not use this space? What I then have are CR/LF control
characters, of course these are not visible and will appear as line
breaks in Visio. Now it would be nice if Visio could translate them
correctly to <BR> tags when displayed in HTML! I hope you get my
intention now, yes, it is somewhat smarter than what IE currently does.

As what goes for the generated pages - so I can modify them any way I
want, also the JS-files ? That would allow me to get it the way I want
it but it's not exactly the most comfortable way. After every HTML
export, a file would have to be replaced. Is there really no other way
to make Visio do this ?

Marcus,

When you have a moment, then perhaps you can email directly at support @
bvisual.net with the reason why it doesn't work for you.

Yes, you can modify any of the pages, html, js, xml, whatever you want.

Thanks for explaining the issue in more detail. Unfortunately, I'm pretty
sure that there's no way to trick Visio into converting anything in the
custom properties. Sorry there's not a better way to do this.
