Lines are cutting off in Word 2000

I teach and often i design handouts that require students to put their names
and other info on a line. For example: Student
ID:____________________________

In word, that line above would cut itself out after about 10 character
spaces, and reappear two/three spaces later. What is this? How do i stop it,
or change the settings so that i can draw a complete line as long as I need???
