Linked Object File Size

Word 2002 Help topic Reducing File Size suggests linking graphics instead of
inserting them. "The destination file stores only the location of the source
file but still displays the linked data."

I have tried this using both Insert Object and Paste Special/Paste Link,
from another Word file and from a JPG file, using the entire file or just a
selected graphic. In all cases, the destination file goes up in size by
approximately the same amount as the source file size. Is there a way to make
this work as described above?

I am using Word 2002 SP-2.

This refers to using Insert | Picture | From File: Link to File, not
inserted objects.

This works. I missed the subtle pulldown menu located next to the Insert
button that lists the Link to File option. Thanks.

What's the difference between "Insert", "Link to File", and "Insert
and Link"?

I am really asking what Insert and Link does?

Insert and Link both links and embeds. The picture will travel with the file
if you send it to someone who doesn't have the original graphic, but as long
as it has access to the original, if you update the original, the picture in
Word will be updated. This does *not* reduce file size, however.

That's helpful. Thanks.
