Linking Holidays into schedule by date

I wanted to link holidays into the schedule by date and not task.

Example:
Christmas Holidays 5 Days - 25 Dec - 30 Dec

Fabrication 40 Days - 01 Dec - 15 Jan

How do I link them to count the holidays as well?

Hi Lemonnic,

I'm not sure I follow your question, but let's see if I can shed some
light.

To record nonworking time for the project (the Christmas holiday you
note) go to Tools > Change Working Time, scroll to December, click and
drag to select the 5 days and click the nonworking time option button to
set those 5 days as nonworking days.

Duration in project is always working time (excluding weekend and any
other nonworking time). So, if you start a task on 1 Dec 2006, 40
working days (with 5 day holiday in December) will schedule the task to
start 1 Dec 2006 to end on 01 Feb 2007.

If you wish the task to extend through *all* nonworking time (weekends
and holidays) change the duration to 40 ed (the "e" denoting elapsed).
A task starting on 1 Dec 2006 with a 40ed duration will finish on 10 Jan
2007.

A word of caution about elapsed duration tasks. An elapsed day to MS
Project is 24 hours. Assigning a resource to an elapsed duration task
will schedule 24 hours of work for the resource for each day.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Hi Julie,
Thanks for the tip... it helped. However, I would like to extend the
capability to recognizing the holidays by region or country. As I'm working
on a project which involves multiple countries with different holidays, e.g.
China, US, Taiwan, Malaysia, etc, I would like to have a column that let me
filled in the country per task and that column cell will be recognized by MS
Project to put in the holidays on tasks only where that country is affected.

Does MS project has such a capability?

Hi Lemonnic,

There are a couple of options that I can see. You could create base
calendars (Tools > Change Working time), one for each region. Insert the
Task Calendar field in table and select the appropriate task calendar for
that task.

The other choice is to use the base calendars and pick the base calendar for
the resources from each region. As you assign the resources, the tasks will
be scheduled based upon the resource calendars. This is a slightly more
labor intensive method, but is more accurate if you have resources from
multiple regions working on the task.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Great Tips!

I'm combining the 2 options to make the work easier.... the second option
only applies to tasks with resources from different countries.

Now my schedule makes more sense... and easier to manage as well.

Cheers!

Hi Lemonnic,

You're very welcome and thanks for the feedback! Great to hear you found
the best combination to make things work for you.
