have microsoft word 2003 and before, when i would type in a link like <http://www.google.com/> it would automatically make it a clickable link. For some reason now, it doesnt do that. Why is this? and how can I make it do it again?

Check the Tools | AutoCorrect settings. If that doesn't work, however,
follow up in a different forum. You’ve landed in a MacWord group (not
your fault, one of the web interfaces is *very* badly designed). You
might get an answer from the people here who use both Windows and Mac,
but you should try asking your question on the general Word newsgroups.

That change was made quite some time back - there was a great deal of
complaint about inadvertently winding up on a web site or in a new email
message when attempting to edit/delete a hyperlink or by way of some other
accidental click. The link is is still usable by pressing Control while
clicking it.

Sorry - meant to mention that if you wish to restore to the original
behaviior go to Tools> Options> Edit & clear the check on the Ctrl+Click
setting.
