"Locked" document

I can't type anything in Word or Excel and in Word it says at the bottom of the screen "this modification is not allowed because the document is locked"

Version of Word? Did you get any warnings when opening the file? Where does the file come from?

I tried going to the Help menu and then "activate product". It says "your beta software has expired - upgrade or use add or remove programs"

Well, that's the answer. You're using a beta product that has expired. You
can either uninstall it or buy the full retail product and upgrade.
