Locking a Record which is currently in use

I have a multiuser database where people work through the table of records one by one checking the details and editing where necessary (please note not all records are edited).

I need for the database to exclude those recordw which are currently in use or prompt the people when working through.

Could you please advise of the full syntax required!!
