Login in errors

I have a section of our site that requires a user name and password (managed
at the host level only as far as I can tell). Some users report having to
enter this information in multiple times before they can log in. Anyone know
why (besides user error)?

Second question, this section of the site can be initally accessed by any
site visitor but if they do not know the user name and password they are
forced to close our site completely. Clicking the "cancel" option on the log
in screen or clicking the "back" button on their browser only makes the log
in screen reappear. Anyone know why?

Thanks!

User names and passwords are CaSe SeNsAtIvE.
Could the problem be that the users are not following that rule??

That's pretty much normal for a password protected site.
The cancel button makes the Password dialog reappear because the browser
tries to load the page again when the button is pressed,
the server says "Nope" you have to log in.

As for the back button, if the user went straight to that part of the site,
there's nothing for the browser to go "Back" to.
