Loss of header footer and page setup

Whenever I import information from the web or scan using microsoft and
transfer to Word, I have difficulty keeping header and footers and page set
up---when I save the document the header and page setup revert to orginal
documnet setup but when I go to page page set up and select differerent first
page and default the changes that I selected return only to disaapear the
next time I save---if I forget to do page setup prior to printing--the
document will not print out as I had planned---cannot figure out how to
correct this--can anyone help--Thank you!
