mail doesn't always send

outlook 2000
windows xp
somestime (and only sometimes) my mail doesn't send when i click the send
button. I don't know that it hasn't until I start to close out of outlook
and I get a message that tells me there are still messages to be sent. Then,
I have to open the message and click on send again. Any thoughts on why it
sends sometimes and not others?
