Mail Merge Stopped Working

I am responsible for an MS Access 2003 Database for a volunteer organization
of 3000 members. From time to time, I print envelopes using the Access to MS
Word mail merge feature, up until the past day or so it worked like a charm.
All of a sudden when I try to do the mailmerge nothing gets sent over to
Word. I have tried accessing the database via Word, but get an error message
that it is "unable to obtain a list of tables from the database". I did try a
"compress and repair" on the database, but still no luck. I would be greatful
for any suggestions as to what has gone wrong. This is a very useful feature
for m and I don't want to lose it.
