Hi ,
since downloading MS office (trial demo version)for Mac o
X 10.2.8,all email programs (Mac Mail,Thunderbird ,Outloo
,Mozilla....)now crash when trying to open a message containing Wor
attachments.OS X Mail lets me send/receive messages with other type o
attachments but some of the others programs don't even open (Outlook).
have deleted the messages ,removed Office from the comp. but the proble
persists(also repaired permissions and all....)Any ideas on getting bac
the ability to read .doc /.xls attachments?

I used to translate the Office stuff thru Appleworks with Maclin
translation, but this one document would not format properly .So unti
downloading and installing the Office trial everything was fine.

B/W G3 OS 10.2.8

Thanks

Ray

Hi Ray,

You seem to be referring to one document in particular. If that's the case,
I would guess that the document is corrupt. To learn how to "uncorrupt" it,
see here: <http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/DocumentCorruption.htm>
(If using Safari, hit Refresh once or twice; better yet, use another
browser.)

Mail.app, and I assume the others too, will let you save the
attachments as a file.

Why not use that technique for chopping the problem in half?

Either the attachment is corrupt, or your whole system is somehow
broken when mail's open attachment in some other program gets called.
Crashing a whole set of mail prorams is rather harsh. Is there anyother
sign that your system is unwell?

At first sight, I'd blame the Office trial's installation on your
machine, since your problem spans mail programs and started with the
Office trial.

Note that simply removing the Office trial folders is not the Microsoft
way of doing things. You must sacrifice a goat, and run special
uninstaller nonsense documented at the MVPs pages at microsoft.com
(lemme see)
Google (this group) uninstall Beth

yep

is a good place to start. (In Safari, knock three times and ask for

Thanks for the answers, actually should have specified that any .do
attachment causes crash to all mail programs, and cannot sav
attachments as I can't even select that message without causing cras
in mail,thunderbird,etc....I have tried uninstall of office 2004 tria
but will need to have a word document sent as attachment.

Thanks

Hi Beth,I actually reloaded the office2004 trial in order to uninstal
as suggested. The mail app. still crash(as do the others, same a
before)but I was able to save the attachments as suggested by Elliot a
long as there are other messages in the mailbox waiting to be opened.
cannot select any message containing Word attachments without crashin
the app.If there are other messages then I just select all from the men
and click "save attachments" that gets them on the desktop and out o
the troubled applications ,and from there I can open them.More troubl
than before but better than not getting the messages.

Used Appleworks with Maclink translation for the longest time and wa
quite happy with that, but latest versaions of word do not format wel
in appleworks or Maclink w/icWord.

Thanks again

Hi Ray,

Something's really wrong and I don't think it has to do with Office at this
point (even if the original installation of the Office trial triggered it
which isn't certain). You've repaired disk permissions, right? Have you
tried running a disk repair program like Disk Warrior?

Maybe there's a conflict with other third-party software. Are you running
an anti-virus program? Any other Add-Ins? Try disabling such things and
rebooting to see if that makes a difference.

You could also try creating another user and seeing if things work properly
there. If they don't, it's almost certainly a disk problem. If they do,
then there's definitely some kind of conflict in your main user.

We'll continue to work with you here as long as we have something to offer,
but you might also want to try an Apple forum since the issue involves Mail
as well as Office apps.

Ray:

I think Beth's correct: you still have some files in your system pointing to
the "New" version of Word, and some pointing to the "Old" one.

You have run Remove Office as suggested? And you have repaired disk
permissions?

OK, now re-install your Old version of Word.

Basically what's happening is that when the other applications attempt to do
anything requiring the Word file format, they are calling for "Word", which
the system is convinced is still installed. Remove Office will remove Word
from your system, but if other applications have stored pointers to it in
their preference files, it doesn't know that and can't fix them.

You now need to force the other applications to discover a new way to get to
Word (or icWord, or whatever it is that you are using to get to a Word .doc
format).

So you need to now re-install that application.

cheers
