manipulating Project 2002 tasks in Web Access or SharePoint

Ken Glynn

Hello,

I need to get straight on a few basics. The boss and I
would like to be able to make major changes to our
Project plan files from within SharePoint or Web Access.
We're running Project 2002 Pro with Project Server 2000
and Windows 2000. So far we only see very limited views
of the project, with only summary tasks listed in the
task list. Further, we are unable to make changes from
this window.

We may be deluded in trying to make changes there. What
is the proper way to go about this? Obviously, we want
to have our Project files on Server and accessible to the
programmers view. We don't want to keep moving updated
files across the network. Any advice?

thanks in advance,

Ken

Yes, you are deluded. Web access and sharepoint are for viewing and updating
the project. If you want to change/remodel your project you do that with
Project Professional. You can still keep your files in Project server. Just
open, edit and save.

For further questions try the microsoft.public.project.pro_and_server
newsgroup. It is the best place for questions about this product.

Thanks Jack, very helpful. What is the definition
of "update" as you used it here: "Web access and
sharepoint are for viewing and updating the project."
Does update mean that the programmers send us updates on
progress, or that users can update the Project plan
itself, tasks and all?

Ken,

What they can do is update their progress on the tasks that have been
assigned to them.
These updates still need to be processed before they will show up in the
project plan.
At the core it is basically an on-line timecard with a bunch of bells and
whistles.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that it is not useful, but it is not a
way to edit your schedule.
They can also "add" tasks but that functionality is rather limited and the
task still needs to be edited in Project to hook it up correctly etc.
