manual feed tray + card stock

Avery 8871 instructs feeding card stock into manual feed tray via protrait
orientation ( short side first). When I do this it does not print correctly
and jams. If I try to use the long side, it shreds the card stock. I used
Publisher and selected 8871 as the page size. What am I doing wrong?

Uh, what is the printer? Version of Publisher & OS of the computer would
also be nice.
