Mark-Up View

It sounds like the document is saved with the Track
Changes feature still turned on (look on the status bar
at the bottom of the Word window and you will see "TRK").

If this is the case, then you can turn off the Track
Changes feature by either double-clicking on "TRK" in the
status bar or, from the Tools menu, select Track Changes
and then deselect "Track Changes While Editing"

In Word 2002 and 2003, these documents will still open in a view showing
markup as long as there are unaccepted changes. You can change this behavior
by clearing the check box for "Make hidden markup visible when opening or
saving" on the Security tab of Tools | Options, but this option is intended
for your protection, to save you the embarrassment of sending a document
with markup still in it.
