Master project - cross project dependancies

M

Michael Murray

Greetings All,

I still have (as per prev posts) a master project (created by Project)
with 6 subprojects, and a resource pool. I'm using Project to level
resources, and all is running well.

Q: Can I have a cross-project predecessor? (In the predecessor column
of 'task 20, project 4', I want to put in 'task 2 of project 3', but
of course, Project thinks I mean 'task 2 of project 4'. (quotes used
to indicate that I'm not using perfect terminology, but I think
adequately explains what I mean)

I know I can use 'Paste link', but (perhaps wrongly) am not keen on
doing this, unless I have to...

There must (?) be a 'master.mpp' ID I can access somewhere?
Proj 2000 on Win 2000 Pro,

any suggestions?
M.

Hi Michael,

Have you tried selecting the predeccesor task in the master project, the
clicking on the successor task (using the CTRL key), and using the link tasks
button on the standard toolbar? That will insert the project name (including
path) and task information in the predecessor column. I think it is much
easier and less error-prone than trying to type the info in the column.

Hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Julie,
I hadn't, but now I have, and it works exactly as required.

thanks a million,

Hi Michael,

Glad to know it worked and thanks for the feedback. On a side note, you may
also use CTRL+F2 instead of the "Link Tasks" button if you prefer.

I have a very similar set up to that described by Michael. However, my
project plan files are automatically replicated to other servers in different
countries. As the paths listed for these inter-project links seem to be
'absolute' (they show the full path from server name to the line in the
project) rather than 'relative' Project often attempts to refer to the
inappropriate versions.
I note that Project does try to be smart and update the paths but this is
not very reliable.
Is there a way to force Project to use relative paths rather than absolute
ones?
For example:
In master_project.mpp I would have a task link with the predecessor field
showing '.\project1.mpp\4' instead of
'\\server1\files\projects\project1.mpp\4"
Thanks
NickT
