master project resource sharing

I have number of locations running up to 200 projects a year. I set up a
master project for each location with resource pool sharing resources with
the projects. All projects are inserted in the same master. So in this case
Master Project = Resource pool. I am using the master project to review the
progress and produce reports. Also in just a few instances I would need to
use master to correct the inserted projects. Eventually I am planning to set
up a Global Master to have Location Masters inserted in Global (It is in
trail with no global resources yet). But having this set up on the server and
accessed from one PC, I can't access master the same way from another PC.
Every time when I am trying to open inserted project (master is open, just to
+ on inserted) I am asked to open resource file that is in turn the master
project already opened. It is happening regardless of the way I open master
(read only, Read/write). I am thinking to set up separate Resource file???
Will it help, or I am trying to do something wrong?

Yes you need a separate resource pool.

You have a very risky setup there! Any PM over-writing or renaming a project
will corrupt one or more projects sooner or later. With that number of
projects you really need to be looking at Project server or similar
technology.

Alternatively, create macros to automatically create a new master without
links for reporting.

Thanks Rod,

I will have all master and resource files password protected for Writing.
Only few people will have access to write the data. I will have a macro to
save a static snap shot on latest for reporting and access by anybody. I am
still missing the point on inserted resource pool. I have created a separete
resource pool for all 105 ptrojects. Then I created Master using 3'd option
upon openning the rsource pool file. The resource pool is inserted in the
master as a separete project now??? Why do I have to have this set up insted
of using the master with resources as resource pool. Also what is the
difference between consolidating projects and inserting projects???

Thanks in advance,

Yakov

Hi,

The master project should be using the resource pool as well. consolidating
and inserting are the same thing.
