Master Slide

Is there a way you can add text to a master slide but have it so it doesn't
show up on the first and last slide?

If you have ppt XP or 2003 you can produce multiple masters (use "insert new
slide master" in the master toolbar). In this case have one with and one
without the text. You can then apply the one without text to the first and
last slides only. Get back if you need more guidance on how to do this.

Select just those slides with ctrl click and then hover the mouse over the
new master. You should see a drop down menu on the right. Chose "apply to
selected slides"

Is your background inserted through Format > Background?
If so, go to the first and last slide,
click Format > Background.
Put a checkmark to "Omit background graphics from master".

Alternately,
Click View > Master > Slide Master.
Right click on the slide master thumbnail.
Then click Edit > Paste.
This will create a duplicate of the master.
Remove the text on the duplicated master.
Now, close master view.

Click Format > Slide Design.
Select the first and last slides,
then under the Slide Design task pane,
look for the template without the text on it.
Hover over the template thumbnail,
then click on the dropdown arrow.
Finally, select Apply to selected slide.
