Merge & center button grayed out

Office XP Excel:

I am trying to figure out how to use the Merge & Center button when I am
formatting a table in Excel. It only occurs if I am in the table layout or
editing a table. If I click on a normal cell which has no color the Merge &
Center button works fine.

Any ideas?

Dasnuts,

Excel table structure is based on columns containing only one fiel
value and won't allow you to merge cells. The idea is like a database
each column is a single field and each row is one record.

Let me know what you're trying to do though as there may be
workaround.

Thanks Dan. I figured that tables wouldnt allow me to Merge two cells
together but I wanted to confirm first.

I have two products where the part numbers are exactly the same so merging
the cells looked better then repeating the part numbers over again. If there
is a work around I would surely appreciate it.
