Merged Dates in new documents

I must be missing the obvious. Can anyone help please me?

I have a simple DATE merge field in my .dot merge
document. When I execute a merge to new document, the new
document still retains the merged date as a date field
rather than just the date as text. The problem is if I
save the new document today and view it again tomorrow,
it now reflects tomorrow's date rather than the original
date I actual performed the merge. So viewing all prior
saved letters, for example, always show me the current
date rather than the creation date.

Use Alt-F9 to view field codes in your template and change the DATE (or
TIME) field to a CREATEDATE field. Then use Alt-F9 to change your view back.
(Don't worry about what the date shows in the template, it will correct when
you create a new document.) You can do the same thing in your current
documents to correct the dates.
