Messages moving out of Unread Mail folder

First off, this doesn't happen all the time. I usually have the Unread
folder selected, but if I select another folder, and then return to the
unread folder, sometimes the highlighted message is marked as read, then
removed. On occasion this will then happen to the next message as well, and
a couple of times, to the third one. Can I stop this happening?
