Microsft Project has encountered a problem and needs to close - overhead projector

I am having a very serious issue with MS Project Professional 2003
running on a Dell Latitude D600 laptop. The following error message
occurs when starting MS Project 2003 Professional: "Microsoft Project
has encountered a problem and needs to close". The issue only occurs
when it is connected to an overhead projector. Here are the attributes
associated with the problem:

- Laptop screen resolution is initially set to a screen resolution of
1400 x 1050
- MS Project 2003 works fine with this setting as long as the laptop is
not connected to an overhead projector
- Once the projector is connected to the projector, it forces the
laptop to go to the 1024 x 768 mode to match the high-end capability of
the projector
- When I start MS Project 2003 then it fails with the message "Microft
Project has encountered a problem and needs to close"
- I discovered how to resolve the issue by unplugging the projector,
setting the screen resolution to 1024 x 768, restarting the OS - and
the problem went away when MS Project was re-started.
- The software maintenance for MS Project is at the Service Pack 1
(SP1) level, but the issue is not resolved by this maintenance
- The adaptor in the laptop is a dual monitor Mobility Radeon 9000
- The laptop is a Dell Latitude D6000
- The software maintenance for MS Project is at the Service Pack 1
(SP1) level, but the issue is not resolved by this maintenance

Has anyone encounterd this or have ideas on what is causing the issue?

The only other issues, that deal with this adapter, that I have been
able to locate on the web were at:

Hi Doc,

I have run into the same problem (during a demo to a customer!) with a Dell
Inspiron 4100 and Infocus projector. I never pinned down exactly how to fix
it, but it was definitely related to screen resolution and the projector.

Hi Doc,

See a post dated 10 Dec 2004 in this ng titled "MS Project 2003 crashes as
soon as I show it on the projector." Unfortunately I don't believe a
resolution was found but it does document a the same issue with a Dell D600.

Hope this helps.

Same problem here. Different model laptop thought.

Anyway, I figured out the fix on our system. Start Project with the laptop
set to screen display only. Once it's started you can hotkey to activate
the 2nd display (the projector).

I'm having the same problem. I found that booting into Safe Mode allowed me
to run Project while attached to the projector. But, since we deal with 3D
graphics, this would not work as a solution. I've found a temporaty
work-around. Boot the PC without the projector. Start Project, then hotswap
the projector in. Project will still be displayed. I'm not sure how stable
it will be. It may crash as soon as we load a file. This is by NO means a
sloution, just triage until the proper solution is found.
