Microsoft Drawing Object/Changing Clip Art Colors

I used to be able to covert clip art to a Microsoft Drawing Object by
selecting "Arrange" "Ungroup". I was then able to select a certain portion
and change the color of it. Now when I do it, a white square appears and you
can not see the image any more. Do you know what may have caused this to
change?
