This problem started yesterday after I opened Business Pla .ppt from
the Microsoft Small Business Center.

I have tried the following with no success:
1. Restored XP to an early restore point.
2. Reinstalled PowerPoint from the control panel.
3. Started PowerPoint in safe mode.
4. Started XP in safe mode.

The Error signature is
AppName: powerprt.exe
AppVer: 11.0.6564.0
AppStamp: 42c1f191
ModName: kernel32.dll
ModVer: 5.1.2600.2180
ModStamp: 411096b4
fDebug: 0
Offset: 001eb33

Where do I go from here?

Hm. Kernel32.dll? Haven't seen one of those in awhile!

When exactly does this error occur? What are you trying to do at that time?

If it's happening when you try to open PPT, then I'd start by closing PPT
and deleting your *.PCB file. That's your PPT toolbar. PPT will recreate it
the next time you open it. You'll lose any customizations you may have made
to the toolbar.

If that doesn't do it, I'd next close PPT and rename all your *.PPA files to
something like *.PPO. PPA files are PowerPoint add-ins. If renaming them
allows you to open PPT properly, then you can close PPT and rename the PPO
files back to PPA one at a time until you isolate the problem add-in.

Isolated the problem to the DataAssistant.ppa file. How do I clean this
up? Are should I live with the file being renamed?

Thanks for the excellent help.

I'm not familiar with the Data Assistant add-in. Do you know what it does or
who the author is? Some add-ins have their own uninstallers, but I can't
tell you if this one does or not.

You can just leave it renamed to PPO or whatever you renamed the PPA file to
if you want. It won't hurt anything.

Below is a description of the add-in and it's link in the Microsoft
Download Center. I could not find and uninstaller in the folder that
contains the file.

The Data Assistant for Microsoft® Office PowerPoint® 2003 provides an
easy-to-use method of inserting and managing graphical data objects
such as Visio drawings, and Excel charts and named ranges into
PowerPoint presentations.

Visio 2003 SP1 is not compatible with this tool. Users must have the
pre SP1 version of Vision 2003 installed to use the Data Assistant.

There are three basic features for the tool: inserting graphical data
objects into PowerPoint, saving graphical data objects for future use,
and retrieving saved graphical data objects for reuse. Because the Data
Assistant creates a connection between PowerPoint and the host
application of the data object (Excel or Visio), you have the option of
inserting the data object as it was saved or refreshing it to reflect
any changes that were made to the data object.

When the Data Assistant is installed, a toolbar and menu options are
integrated into PowerPoint's user interface. To insert data objects
into a PowerPoint slide, open a new or existing slideshow, and then on
the Data Assistant Toolbar, on the File menu, click Insert. You then
locate the Excel or Visio file that contains the object you want to
use, select a few display properties, and then click Insert to include
your choices. This process can be repeated as many times as necessary.

When you want to save data objects inserted by the Data Assistant
(either for use in other presentations or for archiving as a reusable
data snapshot), on the Data Assistant toolbar, click Save to Gallery,
complete some descriptive information, and then click Save. You can
also include custom animations when saving your Data Assistant objects.

You can also retrieve saved Data Assistant objects for use in your
slideshow. In some cases, you may want to insert a saved data object in
its preserved state. Other times, you may want to select a specific
data object from your gallery and refresh the data to reflect changes
that you've made to the source file. In either case, this option is
available from the Data Assistant user interface. Insert the Data
Assistant chart into a slide and set the refresh properties as
appropriate for each chart
