Frustrated with Microsoft Word 2007

My Word ( 2007) will not work. Each time I try to open a Word document, or
start a new document, I get the error message "Microsoft Office Word Has
Stopped Working".
very frustrating, as I am a writer- that's how I make my living. Because I
can't write, I lost a very good contract- because I missed an important
deadline.

I just paid all this money for Office Small Business and a new Lap-top with
Windows Vista. What a mistake!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Any tips...

If this is a new Laptop with new OEM software, then the seller is fully
responsible for support. I presume it is under warranty? If you are unable
to resolve the problem, then take it back for a refund.

Meanwhile, what have you tried to resolve the problem?

Thanks for responding.
It seems the problem is with Word 2007 and not the computer. I uninstalled
and reinstalled.
I changed my default printer- as per instructions I found under a Microsoft
Beta board.
The problem still exists. I am afraid to take the computer back, as I will
lose my E-mails in Outlook. The last time I backed up Outlook, only the
folders and sub-folders were saved. I lost all the actual E-mails.

PS. The Microsoft Office was purchased separately and installed to the computer

OK understood. Was it a fresh install to a clean system (i.e. was an older
version of Office installed first and then upgraded to Office 2007)?

Try starting in Safe Mode: from the run command (windows key +R) type in

winword /a

and press enter. Did it start?

Same thing happended to me with Word 2007 running under Vists Home Premium -
new hard disk, new OS, new install of MS Office Professional - no prior
betas, no hardware or software installs since installation of Office. Word
runs fine for a few weeks - then stops working and presents the following
symptoms.

Symptoms:
1) Word opens OK and will open saved documents, but cursor is frozen on
opened documents.
2) Word will allow me to type characters into a new document.
3) Word pop-up announces that it has 'Stopped Working' when I close it -
this happens for both new and old documents - in fact, it happens if I simply
open Word and close it immediately. Then, pop-up announces that Word is
trying to recover information. Then, pop-up announces that Word has 'Stopped
Working'. Sometimes Word restarts; sometimes there is a button to Cancel
Program.
4) Opening Word, clicking on the 'Office button' and selecting 'Word
Options' opens the window, but only 'Popular' tab is available - can't select
others (like 'Resources').
5) After Word crashes 5 or 6 times the 'Diagnosis' app pops up. Running the
Diagnosis app shows no problems with anything
6) Using the original disk to 'Repair' Office - no joy.
7) Uninstalling and re-installing Office - no joy.
8) Running 'broken' Word in Safe Mode seems to allow it to work.

I obtained a solution from MS Support (Case No. 1036003812). The solution
for me was to modify the registry. I'm no computer expert, so if you try
this - do it at your own risk. I'll just let you know what worked for me,
on my machine. I'll assume that you know how to modify the registry.

Go to: CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Office/Word
Modify Addins -> oldAddins

Go to: CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Office/12.0/Word
Modify Data -> oldData
Modify Options -> oldOptions

Go to: LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Office/Word
Modify Addins -> oldAddins

Good luck.

RStanford, I am so nervous about using your solution. I think it will work,
but I am very nervous about messing up the system.

I am trying to get someone with more expereince to do it for me.
I will let you know if it works

In that case, have a look at
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm. Although the
article was not specifically written for Word 2007, most of what is contains
is applicable to any version of Word (though you may have to modify things
such as specific file paths). Other problems that affect Word 2007
specifically have to do with a missing or damaged Building Blocks.dotx file,
but I don't think that's the issue here.

I finally decided to call Microsoft-My Case # 1036111162.
It actually took more than 2 hours for them to resolve the issue- (even
though I referred them to RStanford’s Case No. 1036003812 they wanted to go
through all the steps ).
I had to allow them to take over my computer, which was OK since it was much
easier than me doing it per their instructions.
They resolved it by adjusting the 'add ins'

Frustrated -

Great! I'm glad things worked out for you - and I'm glad you posted your
solution - it helps all of us.

I posted a thread maybe a month ago where the solution turned out to be some
of the add-ins. The problem that remains is that I can not find a way to
block all the add-ins that are problematic while permitting some that I
want. So I live with occasional flare ups of the old problem where Word
keeps crashes often until I reboot the computer.

My newly installed Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007 contains Word 2007. It freezed up, gave an error message that 'Microsoft Office Word has stopped working' when we tried to open a saved document and edit it.

It tooked nearly 60 minutes - 4 people at Microsoft - the last one in India - - to solve the problem, even though we told them that this problem appears to be common and the 'addins' needed to be fixed. Still, the tech support person when through a bunch of steps, said the master template was corrupted (how did that happen with only one Word document created ???), but the final fix... ta dah... was to rename two files, through the following path: Start button/All programs/Accessories/Run and type in 'regedit' and then follow the path HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Office/12.0/Word . . . . and then change the folder called 'data' to 'olddata' and change the folder called 'options' to 'oldoptions'. The techie said that Word then creates new files to replace. Yes, it worked. Hope this helps.

This has nothing to do with "add-ins." These are Registry keys; see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/MissingMenusEtc.htm for an article that
applies to previous versions.

Tom, I really want to thank you for this post.

Long story, but I am facing serious a deadline...I tried everything and really was starting to sweat. I Wasted time trying several system restores but I am running Vista (forced to use Vista) and that doesn't work returning a error message that has no meaning, I wasted a couple of hours on Microsoft's pages, etc., and then I tried your solution and it did the trick!!

I can't thank you enough!

Like many others, I have had problems with Word 2007. I agree that these are related to add-ins (when you do the registry fix, you're actually clearing the add-ins without going through the program's interface) and I also agree that many add-ins are desired or necessary, and there is no way of knowing which add-in is problematic. However, I have found that as long as I open a Word document as my fist task after the PC boots, then I am OK.
If I open Outlook 2007 first, then Word gives me the "Microsoft Office Word has stopped working" message. I was hoping that this Office 2007 Service Pack 1 that was just released would fix the issue, but it did not. For all of those professionals and/or small business owners like myself, open Word as your first task if you want to stay in business with Word.

I searched Microsofts support site and clicked on "recent KB
Articles" at the top left and found a solution that had me uninstall
"Microsoft Works Add Ins" and my Word works like a charm now!!
