Microsoft project crashes when I use a projector

When I try to use a projector with microsoft project 2003, project crashes. I
have tried with 2 types of projectors and the same results. I have also tried
2 laptops and the same results. Is there a fix for this?

Just to update. I have service pack 1 installed. I have tried screen
resolution changes and no effect. Microsoft Project works in dual screen
configuration when I have it on my docking station and I can switch from a
monitor to the laptop easily without it crashing. It is only when I plug in
one of the projectors and run a command in Project that Project crashes. I
have tried a hard reboot with the projector connected and the run Project,
tried switching it while running Project, tried switching it while project is
not running and every time Microsoft Project crashes.

Hi Brian,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

I have no direct answer as I don't know anything about projectors :(
However, we often have complaints about Project not printing properly, which
mostly concern the printer and its driver. I would suggest you contact the
projector manufacturer and get the latest driver. Otherwise, you could try
posting on a newsgroup that deals with projectors or other hardware.

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :))

I've never had a problem with using a projector but you mentioned something
that might be a clue as to what's going on. You said "...works in dual
screen configuration in my docking station." Do you mean you're using the
Win XP ability to have two monitors active at once, each displaying
independently of the other? Or are you talking about the more conventional
practice of plugging an external monitor into the video port on the laptop
and simultaneously displaying the same image on both the monitor and the
laptop's screen?

I am referring to the more conventional practice. I have not tried
independent views yet, but I will when I get some time and see if that has
any effect.

Actually I was thinking that might be the problem. So much for that theory!

You say Project crashes. Exactly what does it do? Do you get any error
messages? Does the projector work with the laptop ok with other
applications instead of Project?

I have users experiencing the same problem. We installed service pack 1 and
that seemed to resolve the problem. Now it has happened again when using a
projector - not all the time, though. Most of the users with this problem
have laptops and as long as they are in their docking stations, Project works
fine. It's when they are not docked but are connected to the network in a
different location they have the problem. They will get the error that
Project has experienced an error and must shut down. After that, they can't
even open the application much less the file.
