Microsoft Word Problem

When attempting to open Word, my computer locks up. When pressing ctrl alt delete, an error message appears saying "The system is dangerously low in resources. Would you like to terminate the folowing application". After pressing yes, I can no longer access any other programs. After re-booting, all other programs work. I have un-deleted and re-installed Word which has not helped. When looking at the properties of Word under Filelinks, it says "File is not used by any other files". It seems as if an .exe file does not exist. This problem appeared out of the blue. I have run a virus scan which turns up nothing
