Why can't I customize .mid files in PPT 97? The "play settings" tab is greyed out with .mid files.

Need a little more info from you. What are you trying to do?

If you're trying to add a MIDI file as a sound to a transition, only WAV
files can be added in this manner. If it's something else, please
clarify.

Also, what version of PPT are you using?

I am using Office 97 with XP. I downloaded sound files from the microsoft clip art pages to insert into powerpoint to play music while the slide is being shown. When I use a .wave file, the "play settings" tab under Custom Animation is available to "customize" the inserted sound. When I download the sound file from microsoft, which is a MIDI file, the "play settings" tab is not available when I try to customize the sound. I hope this info helps.

Well, this could have to do with the way you inserted the clip.

If you use Insert/Sound/From File, the play settings in custom animation
should be available. When I try to insert a MID file from the Office 97
Clip Gallery, though, I don't have the insert option on the clip, and I
have to actually copy/paste it into my slide. That renders the play
settings on custom animation unavailable.

Try downloading the clip to your clip gallery via the "clips online"
option, then in the clip gallery, find the properties of the clip so you
can see where on your harddrive it lives. Then go back into PPT and use
Insert/Sound/From File, navigate to the clip, and insert it. You should
be able to access the settings then.

Thanks for all the help so far. I copied the file path from clip art which was c:\document and setting\default\application data\microsoft\Media Catalog\artgal50.mmc. However, when I go to insert movie/sound from file, I find the following c:\document and setting\default\ (but no "application data" file). The folders include cookies, desktop, my documents, start menu, user data, windows, but No "application data" folder. Again, another however, if I go into explore, I can fine the "downloaded" files. The path there is Documents and settings\default\applications data\microsoft\media catalog\downloaded clips

Boy am I confused!

I would make it easier on myself. Since you know where the midi file is from
Windows Explorer, go there and copy the file. Now go back to the folder
where your presentation is going to be stored and do a paste. Now do the
insert using the new file location.

Sorry, dunno what's going on with your paths from within PPT. But the
*.MMC file is the "catalog" your clip is housed in, I believe, and the
clip itself is in the "downloaded clips" folder.

At any rate, since you know where the clip is, just go copy it and paste
it into the folder where the PPT presentation lives. You'll want to do
that anyway, because, as think I mentioned earlier, if you ever need to
move this presentation elsewhere, you'll need that MID to be in the same
folder with the presentation.

Apologies. I didn't mention that earlier about copying the sound file
into the same folder as your presentation. I should have.
