million line error message in MS Project

I have a client whose file produces an error when she adds a resource to a
task. The error says that the command exceeds the 1,048,000 line limit. There
are 533 tasks lines and 122 resources. Has anyone come across this and
solved it before?

Hello noliver,

What version of MS Project and what service pack is the client using?
There was a known error with Project 2002 and password protected files
that was corrected with service pack 1.

See the following MS Knowledge Base article for details:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/812644/en-us

If the file was not password protected, or you are not using Project
2002, it sounds as though the file has become corrupt. See FAQ # 43 -
"Handling project file corruption and/or bloat" at:

http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

There was also a bug in PS 2003 where a runaway number of local resources was
created. There was a separate hotfix, but I believe it is included in the
latest SP --SP 2a. Make sure it is applied to both the server & all the
clients.

Hello JulieS,

Thanks so much for your help. It was a simple matter of defragmenting the
..mpp file as per the link you provided. So simple! So effective!

The client was using Project 2003 with SP2 applied. All I needed to do was
open the file and immediately give the "Save" command. This defraged the file
and on reopen I was able to make resource allocations without the million
line error.

Many many thanks!

Noliver
