missing background

Sometimes in the middle of a presentation, the background disappears and all
I get is the writing on a white screen. Any idea what this is, and how it
can be prevented? When I stop presentation mode and go to any other mode,
the background is there, and will appear in the next few slides, but it
could happen again.
Thank you.

It could be your video driver or you may need a more capable video card. You
haven't given us much information. Is this a laptop? What version of
PowerPoint? What version of Windows? Is the presentation stored on your hard
drive, or is it on removable media (CD, etc.)? How much animation do you use in
your presentation? Do the slides have transitions? If so, which ones do you
use?

I am using an IBM laptop Windows 98SE with an ATI 128 AGP adapter, which
should be sufficient. I am using PowerPoint 2000 with transitions and play
it from the hard drive. This occurs even before the animated text needs to
appear on the screen.
Thank you for your help.

The first things that I would do would be to try lowering hardware acceleration,
all the way if necessary, to see if that makes a difference. Then I would check
for an updated video driver.

How much memory does your system have? Have you cleaned out your Temp folder
and defragged your hard disk recently? For some reason, your system does not
have enough available resources to handle the workload. The things I've
mentioned might relieve some of the pressure.
