MOPS 2007 - Project level Timesheets

S

SW

The Default Timesheet Creation Mode can be set to "Current Projects" - users
see only a "Top Level" line representing the entire project. But when Time
is entered and submitted, it never shows up in My Tasks, and can't be
Approved, so the MSP file won't be updated.
Are there other settings that need to be changed, or how exactly is this
feature supposed to work?

The purpose of the Timesheet functionality in Project Server 2007 is to
capture all types of time spent on project work, non-project work, and
non-working time such as vacation and sick leave. Time entered in the My
Timesheet page has NO IMPACT whatsoever on the Microsoft Project plan. Task
progress must be entered manually by team members in their My Tasks page, or
they can import task progress from the My Timesheet page, but they must
create their Timesheets using the Create with Tasks option. So, you are
totally misunderstanding the My Timesheet page AND how to use it. :) Hope
this helps.

Time entered at the "Top Level" line item cannot be imported into My Tasks
since the system does not know how to map top level hours into the
individual task assignments in the project.

The only hours that will import into My Tasks are those that have been
reported against task level line items in My Timesheets that map to a valid
task assignment in My Task for the resource in question.

Thanks - I forgot to mention in my original post that we have Tied Mode
installed, so I deduced what you have just told me when I didn't see anything
in My Tasks after submitting the timesheet.
My boss wants a quick and dirty way for Team Members to report time by week,
by project - he doesn't care about having individual tasks updated via
Timesheets. If we switch to Project level time reporting can I get a report
from the Cube?

I guess it depends on what you want to get out of the system. If all you
care about is how many actual hours were spend on each project by week then
that is available to you out of the box in the timesheet cubes.

As far as project level data, I think the only thing that is available to
you in the timesheet cubes is the project name but nothing else like any of
the custom project level information.

In Project Server when you are using "tied Mode" from 2007, you should keep
in mind that this was added specifically to support customers who did not
want timesheets and My Tasks to get out of sync. You can still go to My
Tasks and "sync" the data back from My Timesheet. You cannot manually enter
the data in two places. This was a workaround solution to solve a critical
business requirement from the user community.

If all you are looking for is a simple way to enter time for a week. the
project level is the solution designed for your scenario and you can get a
report of this information from either the CUBE or the Reporting DB. All
timesheet data is carried to both storage locations.
